The Special Interest Group 3D (SIG 3D) is a national and international independent working group that deals with issues concerning modelling, storage, generation, visualisation and marketing of 3D city and regional models. In particular, the SIG 3D encourages the set-up of 3D spatial data structures with the aim of an improved availability and use of 3D spatial information in all possible application areas. The work of the SIG 3D is based on open international standards.

Established in 2002, 60 partners of national and international sectors of economy, science and public administration have been working together in the SIG 3D. The members come from all over Germany and other European countries.

Since the beginning of 2010 the WG SIG 3D is part of the SDI Germany and represents the Germany-wide network for the 3D area in this context. The SIG 3D meets at least four times a year. The jointly developed results are available to all members as part of the exchange of knowledge and technology transfer.

The SIG 3D has developed the specification of the 3D modelling and exchange format CityGML (City Geography Markup Language). CityGML was adopted as an official standard of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) in August 2008.

Die SIG 3D focuses currently on the following main topics

  • Business models for the operation of 3D city models
  • Realization/expansion of CityGML in new application fields
  • ALKIS 3D
  • 3D visualisation
  • Participation in the development of INSPIRE
  • Cooperation on OGC.
