The mission of the GDI-DE is directed to an efficient and innovative provision of public spatial data in the framework of a web-based, networked and standard-based spatial data infrastructure.

In order to achieve this goal, the Steering Committee SDI Germany and its Coordination Office were established in 2005 on the initiative of the Head of the Federal Chancellery together with the Heads of State and Senate Chancelleries and the working group of the State Secretaries for E-Government. The mission, formulated at that time, aimed at developing and implementing a national spatial data infrastructure of Germany.

This mission was implemented during the first years, among others, with the coming into force of the Administrative Agreement GDI-DE, the development and maintenance of the architecture of the SDI Germany as well as the operation of the national technical components, the Geoportal.de and the spatial data catalogue Germany (Geodatenkatalog.de) as well as the validation tool GDI-DE Testsuite and the GDI-DE Registry.

The current missions and measures of the SDI Germany are derived now from the decisions of the Steering Committee SDI Germany based on the National Geoinformation Strategy (NGIS).

Another important and mandatory function of the SDI Germany is to perform the tasks of the national contact point of the European Commission for the implementation of the Directive 2007/2/EG (INSPIRE).
