Navigation and service

How is my research result divided up into the three tabs?
  • In the "Maps" tab all hits are represented that describe a map service or a displayable map retrievable via the internet. In the hit list the possibility of a direct representaion of maps is highlighted by the "Display in Map >" button.
  • In the "Geodata" tab all hits describing geodata are presented. These geodata are not necessarily available in the internet. Via the detailed information section you will find contact data through which you can purchase the relevant geodata. In the event that geodata have available a map service, they are also provided as in the "Maps" tab.
  • In the "Contents" tab all hits on editorial contents of the Geoportal.de are listed. The hits refer to the respective pages of the Geoportal.de.
How does the INSPIRE filter narrow my research result?

Via the INSPIRE filter your search result is narrowed to maps and data provided by geodata-keeping agencies in Germany for INSPIRE. To this end the filter uses two sources of information:

  • In the metadata maintained by the geodata providers the key word “inspireidentifiziert” (inspireIdentified ) is included. This way, geodata providers mark the maps and data provided within the scope of the European INSPIRE directive.
  • the dataset or map service was reported by the respective geodata provider in the current INSPIRE-Monitoring to the GDI-DE Coordination Office with a unique identifier (ID).
  • INSPIRE is a European directive for the establishment of a European GeoDataInfrastructure. Learn more about INSPIRE .
Who provides the thematic maps for the Geoportal.de?

Potentially, all providers of geodata can supply maps for the purpose of thematic maps through their respective web services. In this context we understand Thematic Maps as combinations of several maps.
From the following providers we have chosen maps with nationwide coverage for the activation of the Geoportal:

  • Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe
  • Bundesinstitut für Bau-, Stadt- und Raumforschung
  • Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde
  • Umweltbundesamt
  • Eisenbahn-Bundesamt
  • Leibnitz-Institut für Angewandte Geophysik
  • Wasser- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung des Bundes und Wupperverband
  • Deutscher Wetterdienst

However, in future also thematic maps at the regional level with high resolution and on a large scale shall be integrated for this purpose.

Which datasets are used for the search?

The search utilizes on the one hand the dataset of the GeoData Catalog-DE, a central information system for geodata in Germany. Furthermore, via the search interface textual and editorial contents of the portal are researched.

The contents of the GeoData Catalog-DE originate from a central catalog. This central catalog is fed from about 30 decentral catalogs held by the Federal Government and the Länder (states of the Federal Republic). The data contained extend to all available subject areas (e.g. topography, geology, statistics, environment, weather, etc.) and describe both geodata and map services visualizing maps in the internet.

The catalog operators are in particular:

  • Metainformationssystem des Bundesamtes für Kartographie und Geodäsie und der Vermessungsverwaltungen der Bundesländer (AdV-MIS)
  • Baden-Württemberg: Metadatenkatalog GDI-Bw
  • Bayern: UOK
  • Bundesinstitut für Bau-, Stadt- und Raumforschung: BBSR Katalog
  • Berlin/Brandenburg: Katalog der GDI BE/BB (GeoMIS BE/BB)
  • Berlin: Berliner Metadatenkatalog
  • Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde: BfG Katalog
  • Bundesministerium für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz: BMELV Katalog
  • Bremen: Metadatenkatalog der Freien Hansestadt Bremen
  • Statistisches Bundesamt: DESTATIS
  • Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt: SRTM Metadatenkatalog
  • Deutscher Wetterdienst: CDC (Climat Data Center) Katalog
  • Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe: GeoDAK
  • Hamburg: Hamburger Metadatenkatalog
  • Hessen: Geodatenkatalog Hessen
  • Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: GDI M-V - CSW
  • Niedersachsen: Metadatenkatalog (Geodatensuche Niedersachsen)
  • Bundesanstalt für Seeschiffahrt und Hydrographie: NOKIS Katalog
  • Nordrhein-Westfalen: NRW Katalog
  • Umwelverwaltungen von Bund und Ländern: PortalU
  • Rheinland-Pfalz: Rheinland-Pfalz GDI
  • Saarland: PortalU-SL
  • Sachsen: GeoMIS.Sachsen
  • Sachsen-Anhalt: Metadatenkatalog
  • Schleswig-Holstein: Schleswig-Holstein Katalog
  • Thüringen: GeoMIS.TH 2.0
  • Wasser- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung des Bundes: WSV Katalog
Which data basis does the place search use?

The dataset "Georeferenzierte Adressdaten Bund" (Georeferenced Address Data Federal Government) and parts of the dataset "Geographische Namen" (Geographical Names) are used as data basis. The first mentioned dataset consists largely of data of the "Zentrale Stelle Hauskoordinaten und Hausumringe der Vermessungsverwaltungen" (ZSHH) der Länder ( Cenral Agency Building Coordinates and Outlines of the Survey and Cadastre Administrations of the Länder).

How do the filters function in the hit list?

In the area to the left of the hit list you have the possibility to narrow your search result afterwards. This filter option refers to the “Maps“ and "Geodata". In the following you will find a description of how these filters work. The descriptions are targeted to experts and apply to the ISO Standards ISO 19115, 19119 and 19139

Topics: For the "Topics" filter the metadata field "Topic Category" is evaluated and assigned to different areas (e.g. inlandwaters, oceans are assigned to the sector "Water"), which means that by the selection "Water" all metadata with the TopicCategory inlandWaters and oceans will appear in the hit list.

XPATH: /gmd:MD_Metadata/gmd:identificationInfo/gmd:MD_DataIdentification/gmd:topicCategory/gmd:MD_TopicCategoryCode

Purchase: For the "Purchase" filter the metadata fields "electronicMailAddress" for the ordering filter, and "linkage" for the download filter in the distributionInfo area are evaluated. When activated, only metadata sets are displayed that have contents in these fields.

XPATH electronicMailAddress: distributionInfo//distributor//contactInfo/*/electronicMailAddress

XPATH linkage: distributionInfo//transferOptions//onLine/*/linkage

Date: For the "Date" filter the metadata field "Date" is evaluated. In case that no readable date is contained in this field, the field "dateStamp" is evaluated. The hit list includes metadata sets within the date range as specified by you. If only "from" has been filled in the current date for "to" will be added.

XPATH dateStamp: dateStamp

XPATH date: identificationInfo[1]//citation//date/*/date

Scale: For the "Scale" filter the metadata field "Denominator" is evaluated. By indication of a scale range only metadata within this range are written into the hit list.

XPATH denominator: identificationInfo[1]//spatialResolution//equivalentScale/*/denominator

Evaluation: Through the "Evaluation" filter you can filter the hit list according to the number of starlets (maximally 5 rating starlets = highest rating). The evaluation originates from an additional field in the search index of the Geoportal.de, which is allocated a value via the evaluation function. The respective evaluation does not enter into the original dataset of the GeoData Catalogue-DE.

INSPIRE: INSPIRE is a European directive for the establishment of a European GeoDataInfrastructure. Learn more about INSPIRE .Via the INSPIRE filter your search result is narrowed to maps and data provided by geodata-keeping agencies in Germany for INSPIRE. To this end the filter uses two sources of information:

  • the Keyword inspire I identified appears in the metadata maintained by the geodata-keeping agencies. This way, geodata-keeping agencies mark the maps and data provided within the scope of the European INSPIRE directive.
  • the dataset or map service was reported to the GDI-DE Coordination Office with a unique identifier (ID) by the respective geodata provider in the current INSPIRE-Monitoring .
Which data are used for the standardly displayed maps?

The Geoportal.de map viewers standardly offer three map types based on the official spatial base data of the Survey and Cadastre Administrations of the Länder:

  • the WebAtlasDE (Coloured),
  • the WebAtlasDE (Grayscale Levels),
  • and georeferenced aerial photographs (Digital Orthophotos).

The WebAtlasDE constitutes a zoom level-independent nationwide presentation service on the basis of the Digital Landscape Models of the "Amtliches Topographisch-Kartographischen Informationssystems" (ATKIS). Authoritative Topographic Cartographic Information System (ATKIS).
